Support Marine & Aquatic Education #OneDropAtATime

Dear NMEA supporters,

As ocean lovers we know that Earth’s largest feature needs our help. Waters are warming, plastics are infiltrating, and populations are shifting.

The work that we do in support of our mission, “making known the world of water,” is even more critical as we face these challenges.

Like the ocean, NMEA has changed in recent years, and our influence around the Blue Planet has expanded. Our sector of youth members, champions of our ocean future, has grown exponentially, and these young leaders have attended our youth conferences and special webinars. At our annual conferences, Traditional Knowledge practitioners have shared their unique perspectives, with impressive artistic and cultural flair, while describing how First Nations communities have been particularly affected by global changes. Through our Expanding Audiences program, we have supported educators who represent or work with communities traditionally underrepresented in marine science, and our NMEA Board of Directors has participated in diversity training to learn how to broaden our culture of inclusivity.

Perhaps most visible is NMEA’s influence in the international community. Our annual conferences have welcomed marine educators from six continents (no penguin members yet as far as I know!), and our organization has provided impetus and support for marine education networks to form and flourish around the globe. The ocean literacy movement, of which NMEA has always been a lead partner, has spread worldwide, and ocean literacy is even explicitly mentioned in the charter for the United Nations’ Decade of the Ocean.

Although all of these accomplishments should be celebrated, there is still work to be done. With your support, donations to this year’s Annual Appeal will extend our influence in places and spaces where we have not been before. Our vision for change includes new initiatives in several areas. For example, in 2019, we seek to have a refreshed website that better reflects our activities and values and highlights the work that we do as an organization. We hope to offer more travel support to members within the United States, as well as leaders coming from developing nations. A redesign of our Current journal will ensure a broader readership and more up-to-date features. A webinar series will connect our youth members with professionals in a variety of marine science careers, showcase the importance of Traditional Knowledge for ocean conservation, and demonstrate the diversity of our members. Through conferences, summits, publications, and digital tools, we will share the principles and practices of ocean literacy with new audiences.

Our organization is dependent upon memberships and donations. We need your help to make these ideas come to fruition.

So, on this Giving Tuesday, and in this season of giving, we ask you to support our efforts through a donation of any amount in order to meet these goals. Visit http://www.marine-ed.org/donations/ to make your tax-deductible donation to our Annual Appeal. Together we can make a difference, one drop at a time.

Sincerely,

Meghan E. Marrero, EdD

Our Annual Fund - A letter to members

Posted By Lisa D. Tossey, Monday, November 28, 2016
Updated: Tuesday, December 13, 2016

Dear World of Water Lovers,

As a member of the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA), you are an important part of the transformational and inspirational endeavors that our organization is working on, from championing Ocean Literacy across the nation and the world, to advancing educational practice in and out of the classroom, to mentoring the next generation of aquatic stewards.

NMEA provides to you, our members, with valuable resources and opportunities to connect, such as:

A vibrant, engaging website

Quarterly e-newsletters and event recaps

A peer-reviewed journal, Current: The Journal of Marine Education

A dedicated National Office with eager and expert staff

A comprehensive strategic plan

An inspirational national conference

NMEA values members such as you, and we hope that you will further support the organization by joining us as we embark upon our third NMEA Annual Appeal!

Financial support from our members helps us maintain our staffing in the National Office and provide the services necessary to run the organization with the consistency and efficiency you expect from a professional association. Your help is key as we implement our strategic plan and continue to strengthen NMEA to better “promote the world of water both fresh and salt.”

You can make an unrestricted gift that will help underwrite daily operations, or you can direct your gift to Current or to support a conference scholarship, including the Johnette Bosarge Memorial Fund. Each and every gift provides a measure of the support needed to sustain NMEA as the global standard for aquatic and marine education.

Thank you for being a member of NMEA!

Here's more information on how to make your donation today >

Sincerely,

Your NMEA Board of Directors & Committees

#GivingTuesday & our Annual Fund - A letter to members from President Robert Rocha

Members,

The National Marine Educators Association is an organization that has served as an immensely important part of the professional network of its members throughout its existence. We now turn to you for your support as we embark upon our second annual appeal.

In a short, intense period of time, NMEA has transformed itself to enable us to provide to you, our members, a vibrant, engaging website, consistent e-newsletters, a revived peer-reviewed Current: The Journal of Marine Education, and a new National Office with new staff. We have pulled together a new strategic plan that is comprehensive yet flexible, and is being guided by veteran NMEA members with the help of some dedicated new members. We continue to serve as a leader in Ocean Literacy (OL) efforts nationally and collaborate with international partners in their efforts to promote OL worldwide. Our national conferences inspire, educate and connect educators from around the globe.

Financial support from our members helps us maintain our staffing in the National Office and provide the services necessary to run the organization with the consistency and efficiency you expect from a professional association. Your help is key as we implement our new strategic plan and continue to strengthen NMEA.

It is both a great privilege and a great responsibility to serve as the President of the National Marine Educators Association. I do not take this role lightly and I do not take asking you for a donation lightly. We are all in this field and ‘promote the world of water both fresh and salt’ because we love what we do and enjoy working with each other. The rewards rarely help us leap upwards into new tax brackets!

As I stated at this year’s annual meeting in Newport, RI: "What we do matters. We protect our aquatic resources, we educate thousands of children and adults, we share our educational tricks and materials with each other, and we continue to motivate each other and the generation that will take the reins from those of us who have been doing this for quite some time”.

What you contribute during an annual appeal also matters. Each and every gift provides a measure of the support needed to sustain NMEA as the global standard for marine education. You can make an unrestricted gift that will help underwrite daily operations, you can direct your gift to Current, or you can support a conference scholarship, including the Johnette Bosarge Memorial Fund. This fund, which honors the memory of our late administrative assistant, provides an annual conference scholarship to a member who best exemplifies Johnette’s selfless spirit and dedication to NMEA.

Please consider a gift to the NMEA Annual Appeal. Visit here to make your donation to NMEA. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Rocha signature

It's not too late to donate to our Annual Fund

Posted By Lisa D. Tossey, Saturday, January 17, 2015

Don Hudson"I like making an annual contribution to NMEA because I believe in the mission to make known the world of water. The wonderful community of colleagues that comes together every summer to explore new ideas and celebrate past successes inspires me to dig a little deeper."

- Don Hudson, NMEA treasurer & member

Did you know the NMEA Annual Fund was created in 2013 to broaden financial support of the mission of the organization? The Annual Fund helps to support three important areas of our work: the staff in the National Office who manage our membership and communication, scholarships for the annual conference, and the publication of our peer-reviewed journal, Current.

And don't forget: tax-deductible donations made through the end of January can be applied to 2014 tax returns! Donate today >
